Message from the Technical Programme Coordination pfeil

weiss
The programme of the 20th Biomass Conference and Exhibition shall guide you through a full week of presentations. Again, by offering a selection of the best, most relevant and latest presentations from about 1000 abstract received, the scientific committee offers you in this conference a deep insight into today's complexity of Bio-energy. As you can see from the programme, the full range of Bio-energy is to be presented in Milan, regarding Biomass resource assessments, conversion technologies, incentive and deployment schemes, sustainability and the crucial role Bio-energy plays within the ambitious goals of the European Union's renewable energy policies.

Providing you this full range of information, the scientific committee is convinced that listening to presentations, talking to the experts, and debating during poster session provides you with the particular flavours of Bio-energy: though a very complex renewable technology, it is the most versatile of all.

This year you will witness a particular focus on Biogas, from production to distribution, and the particular role it can play to complement renewable electricity sources like wind and photovoltaic solar electricity.

The recently presented European Commission strategy 'Innovating for a Sustainable Growth: a Bioeconomy for Europe' is setting also the political scene for the huge opportunities for growth and employment offered by the full value-chain of Bio-energy, and the conference will give you the opportunity to participate in presentations and discussions around this theme.

The citizen's concerns on the environmental performance of Bio-energy, regarding greenhouse-gas emissions, land use and biodiversity are not spared from the rich programme of this conference, as meeting these requirements is one of the promises Bio-energy has to fulfil.

I wish you that this conference programme does not only your interest in knowing more about recent developments in Bio-energy, but that you can take the conference also as an opportunity to develop contacts, create new collaborations and networks, or just meet again people which share your engagement for renewable energy.

I am looking forward to welcome you in Milan!

Monday, 18 June 2012, 13.30 - 18.30

The Biofuels FlightPath Core Team* and the Directorate General for Energy invite you to participate and contribute in the Workshop Biofuels FlightPath - Workshop on Upstream R&D and Innovation for Paraffinic Biofuels addressing upstream and innovative pathways and value chains for the conversion of sustainable biomass sources to paraffinic biofuels for use in aviation.

The event is organised by the Biofuels FlightPath Core Team* and the Directorate General for Energy.

Biogas goes Europe and Biowaste to Energy:
Tuesday, 19 June 2012, 13.00 - 18.30

The event addresses the main challenges for further biogas development in Europe. High-level speakers from politics and policies, industry and research sectors present the latest trends in markets, policies, industrial applications and technical solutions. Key-stakeholders contribute in a panel discussion to the debate about how to boost industrial biogas developments in emerging European biogas markets. The event is organised by

EuroBioRef Workshop: Future Prospects for Biorefineries
Tuesday, 19 June 2012, 14.00 - 18.30

The workshop will be organised in the course of the project inviting external experts participating in the European Biomass Conference to discuss the project objectives and results obtained until this period and to benefit from potentially new research results. This workshop provides direct feedback regarding their current research activities and considers their ideas to be included in the project. The workshop will also seek to place the work of EuroBioRef concept in an EU perspective and look at the overall policy framework driving biorefineries in the EU. This will then be compared on an international level to be concluded by a round table assessing the prospects for biorefineries in the EU compared to the EU’s international partners. The event is organised by

Job Opportunities in the Biomass/Bioenergy Sector
Wednesday 20 June, 8.30 - 10.30

This special event on 'Job Opportunities in the Biomass/Bioenergy Sector' addresses the main challenges emerging in the field of education for the biomass/bioenergy sector. 'Bio-themes' appear in different established courses (agriculture, mechanical engineering, process engineering, civil engineering, etc.). There are numerous bio related topics and therefore education has to cover both the full bandwidth of this sector as well as the depth of each of its topics. Thus different education models are available in Europe. This event will bring together companies, potential candidates and universities, identifying their needs and discussing the crucials for qualified staff for the biomass/bioenergy industry. The event is organised by

Biogas upgrading and grid injection:
Wednesday, 20 June 2012, 9.30 - 17.30

This special event on 'Biogas upgrading and grid injection' addresses the main challenges for further biomethane development in Europe. The upgrading of biogas to biomethane for feed-in to the natural gas grid or for use as vehicle fuel is gaining in interest and importance worldwide. More than 150 plants are already in operation and many are under construction or in the planning stage. During this one-day-event we will elucidate the state of biogas upgrading along the overall value-chain with a special focus on Europe. The event is organised by

Biomass and Bioenergy: an Investor's Perspective - Challenges and Opportunities for the Financial Community:
Wednesday, 20 June 2012, 14.00 - 18.30

Biomass trade will be essential for Europe to achieve renewable energy targets, yet the financial community does not well understand the risks associated with biomass and thus capital to develop biomass trade is difficult to find. This event will provide the financial community with information on latest trends in the biomass and bioenergy industry, market perspectives for biomass, biofuels and bio-based chemicals, trade opportunities, options to mitigate risks, ensuring sustainability & technologies for next gen biofuels. The workshop will look at investments to promote trade from the point of view of the investor and project proponents, and show examples of successful joint ventures. A final round table will provide a platform for interactive debate and the presentation of possible project proposals. The event is organised by
