EU-Japan biomass seminar - Sustainable value chains for distributed bioenergy projects
Monday 27 May
15:15 – 18:30 | Room: 1.13
In recent years, the use of wood and wood residues for heat and power production from small-scale decentralized plants has increased in Japan, thanks the adoption of a supportive National policy framework and to the availability of feed in tariffs for electricity. One of the technologies adopted is biomass gasification. Building on the outcomes of the 1st EU-Japan Small-Scale Biomass Gasification Seminar, this event will gather experts from research and industry from both Europe and Japan to discuss the challenges and the solutions for the implementation of efficient biomass value chains for decentralized bioenergy projects in Japan.

Bio-based products making the circular economy era a reality
Tuesday 28 May
8:30 – 10:00 | Room: 3C
Free Access but registration is required
The Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) is a €3.7 billion public-private partnership between the EU and the industry, representing the largest industrial and economic cooperation endeavor ever undertaken in Europe in this field. Through its projects, BBI JU promotes innovation, job creation and reindustrialization of rural areas in Europe. The panel discussion and consecutive roundtable and Q&A session will exchange views on the immense potential the bio-based sector holds for Europe in terms of social, environmental and economic benefits, while allowing for the development of scientific advancements that will eventually accelerate the transition to a full-fledge circular economy.

Funding opportunities for Bio-based Industries in 2019
Tuesday 28 May
10:15 – 12:45 | Room: 3C
Free Access but registration is required
The Office for the Promotion of the EU Framework Programme of the Portuguese Innovation Agency (ANI, Agência Nacional de Inovação), in partnership with the Portuguese Industrial Association (AIP, Associação Industrial Portuguesa) – Enterprise Europe Network (EEN-Portugal) organises an Info Session specifically dedicated to discuss the funding opportunities offered for the bio-based industries in 2019. This session is organised in the context of PERIN (Portugal in Europe Research and Innovation Network). It builds on the discussion held during the first session, “Bio-based products making the circular economy era a reality”, organised by the BBI JU office. This event targets all types of stakeholders along the bio-based value chains and is an excellent opportunity to explore networking opportunities.

2nd Dialogue on contribution of a sustainable wood energy production approach to Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): Focus on Africa - EU collaboration
Tuesday 28 May
09:00 – 13:00 | Room: 3A
The 2nd dialogue will discuss opportunities of sustainable bioenergy production and use as a contribution to forest landscape restoration (FLR) with stake¬holders across sectors and especially between FLR and bioenergy stakeholders. The focus of the event is on Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), as both challenges and opportunities for sustainable woody bioenergy to contribute to FLR – and vice versa – are concentrated in countries in this region.

Getting published, perspectives of Editors
Tuesday 28 May
12:35 – 13:30 | Networking Area
This panel of scientific journal editors will offer insights into scholarly publishing and give advice for preparing manuscripts to give you the best chance of publishing in an international journal. The session is suitable for PhD and Post Docs students, as well as for researchers who have experience in the dissemination their research results. In this session we will also look specifically at getting published in Biomass and Bioenergy’s Special Edition calling on papers presented at EUBCE, so anyone interested in this Special Edition should attend, and ask any questions they may have.

Where will we get our biojet?
Tuesday 28 May
16:00 – 18:30 | Room: 3B
It is possible to produce the biojet from a wide range of feedstocks (oil seeds from trees and oil-bearing crops like canola; sugarcane and maize; wood residues from forests; stalks and stover) and through a wide range of processes. Which pathways are used in different places will largely depend on which feedstocks are cheapest and most abundant. It will also depend on which conversion processes can be developed and commercialised at scale. This side event will explore the most likely pathways for biojet expansion and discuss the policies needed to put them in place.
